The International House Language Awareness Course

Who is the course meant for?

The course is suitable for you if you are an English teacher or would like to train to be one. You need to have a good level of English and be interested in understanding the way in which English grammar works in more detail.

Who devised and organized the course?

The course will be delivered by the experienced and qualified English Language Trainers of IH Riga Satva who are responsible for our own internal training and development programme. The Head of Teacher Training is Bruce Bax who has worked as a teacher trainer for six years at renowned International House schools in IH Katowice in Poland, IH Budapest in Hungary and now for his third year at IH Riga.

What are the goals / aims of the course?

The course will familiarize you with descriptions of English commonly found in coursebooks and other published material and then enable you to assess them in terms of their descriptive accuracy and their usefulness to learners.

What does the course consist of?

The course is made up of 14 sessions each lasting 90 minutes, each focusing on a different area of grammar. The whole course will last 28 academic hours (1 academic hour = 45 minutes). The trainers take participants through a series of tasks designed to increase their understanding of the particular area to help them deal with the language point and learner problems. Session titles include:

  • Tense
  • Auxiliaries
  • Modal Verbs
  • Will and Would
  • Future Forms
  • Forms with Have
  • Forms with Be
  • The Verb Form
  • Conditional Sentences
  • The Noun Phrase
  • Language as Lexis

When and where the course will be delivered?

The course will take place every second Wednesday at IH Riga from the 7th October 2009.

What qualifications / documents will teachers receive on successful completion of the course?

Course Participants will receive an International House Language Awareness Certificate on completion of the course. International House schools are recognized throughout the world for the quality of their teaching and training.
