Senior Teachers

Katerina Kazanowska

About myself: My name is Katerina and I am an English teacher at IH Riga. I am a very optimistic and active person and I have a lot of hobbies. I love travelling and discovering new places, meeting new people and making friends. I also love learning new languages as I believe that each language opens a whole new world to you and makes you a happier person!

My hobbies/ interests: I have a lot of hobbies. The most recent one is yoga, which helps me to stay cheerful all day. I also love dancing. I used to dance in an Irish dancing group called "Moonlight Dances", and I am thinking of trying something new some time soon. I love playing tennis and just walking, so whenever I have time I try to walk to work instead of taking a tram :) Another hobby is collecting paper dolls - I have over a hundred paper dolls in my collection, and the oldest one is already 60 years old!

My dreams and ambitions: I love dreaming, but more than that I love making my dreams come true. My greatest professional dream now is to become a teacher trainer, which I think is a very interesting thing to do. As to other dreams, I would love to learn to play the guitar and I really want to start dancing again.

My educational background: I've got a BA in English Philology from the University of Latvia, and now I am doing a BA in psychology in BPMA. As to the profession qualifications, I have done an IH Young Learner Course in 2007, a CELTA in 2008, DELTA Module 1 in 2009, and the British Council e-Moderators' Course in 2010. This year I am also planning to start a distance learning MA program in TESOL in the UK.

My teaching experience: I have taught in several places and worked with students of different ages and levels. Currently, I work with very young learners, adult students, and exam preparation classes at IH Riga, and also teach some ESP classes in a vocational school in the centre of Riga.

What do you like most about IH Riga-Satva: If I said I loved everything here, I would not be far from telling the truth! In fact, everything I have learnt as a professional teacher comes from IH Riga. I love my colleagues and I think that we have a wonderful team of professionals. And of course I love our students, who are friendly, motivated, and a pleasure to teach :)

How long have you been teaching at IH Riga? This is my fourth year at IH Riga

Why do you teach at IH Riga? To tell the truth, IH Riga has always been my dream - at first, when still at school, I dreamt of becoming an IH Riga student (unfortunately, I was very busy at the time and could not become one). So when some years later I decided that I wanted to be a teacher, I thought that my dream might still come true and I might join the team as a teacher. Which I did, and have not had a single regret so far! Honestly, I think IH is the best place in Latvia for a teacher to work at!

Michael Man

About myself: I was born in North London but grew up in South London. I now live in Berkshire which is about an hour west of London whilst I’m in England. Otherwise, I’m still searching for my ‘home’! I also have a younger brother and sister to keep me company at home.

My hobbies and interests: Nothing out of the ordinary – I enjoy travelling, watching movies, listening to music, trying my hand at cooking on occasions, reading, skiing, talking, barbecuing...and of course going out and spending time with friends - but my real weakness is I love eating out!

My educational background: I went to Brunel University in West London and got a BSc in Geography. I also gained my Trinity TESOL certificate in October 2003 in London.

My teaching experience: I started teaching in the summer of 2004 with a summer school in the UK. I then moved to Italy and Spain briefly as well as spending time in Poland. In between those journeys abroad I also taught at my local FE College back in the UK.

Teaching is a difficult job but one in which I've come to realise I love the most. There’s no better feeling than when there’s a chance to play a part in helping another person acquire a new skill that would make a difference in their lives. And I certainly hope to continue to improve as a teacher in the future.

My reasons for coming to Riga: My first thought was why not? It’s a major city with plenty on offer, day and night, and I’ve lived and worked in the region before and had a fabulous time so I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed!

Zanna Kukina

About myself: I have a husband and son. They are a great support to me, they know that “mum “ can be very tired after lessons and they help me a lot. In fact, most of the flashcards that I use with my little students were made by my son who spent hours coloring them in.

My hobbies/ interests: My whole family enjoys cycling, rollerblading and skiing together, so in spring, summer and autumn you can meet us on the cycle-path “ Imanta- Jurmala” or in Mezapark cycling and rollerblading around. In winter we often spend weekends in our local “mountains.” Even though they are not very high, we enjoy skiing down them.

My dreams and ambitions: I have been to the Austrian Alps twice. It was a breathtaking experience! I’ve only been down the “ blue and red routes,” so my ambition is to conquer the “black route” one day!

My educational background: My qualifications include a Bachelor of Philology from the University of Latvia (1992), the University of Latvia diploma in English language teaching (2004),the Cambridge CELTA ( Certificate in English Teaching to Adults, 2005) and the IH Certificate in Teaching Young Learners, 2006.

My teaching experience: As long as I can remember I have been working with children and teaching them English. In fact, I have been doing it since 1992. My job is also my hobby: it is really creative , engaging and even fun to be a teacher. It always makes you think, develop and move on in order to make your lessons effective, interesting and enjoyable.

I enjoy working for IH Riga because it's a special place with a great working atmosphere and the best teachers in Riga. I'm proud to be a member of such a wonderful team!!!

Raquel Garcia Barobs

About myself: I am half American half Spanish. I was brought up in Segovia, a beautiful town in Spain where my father is from and have spent most of summers in Minneapolis, USA, where my mother was born. I have a younger brother who is also bilingual. I love interculturalism!!!!!

My hobbies and interests: I love reading, going for walks, running, watching movies and TV shows (kind of an addiction!!) dancing all kinds of music, eating out, trying all kind of different food, travelling everywhere, other cultures, literatures and languages, personal roots, family histories…

My educational background: I have a Degree in English Philology by the University Autonoma of Madrid; a Degree in Advanced Studies (DEA) Investigation Project on Latvian Literature and I’m presently studying the Doctorate program European Literature, University Autonoma of Madrid (UAM) Spain. I’ve also studied two summer courses “Latvian for beginners” at the University of Riga, Latvia. And of course I’ve got a CELTA certificate as well.

My teaching experience: I have been an English teacher since I was 17, when I first worked as a monitor in a summer camp. Since then I have studied and focused on learning and improving my teaching techniques, always wanting to get new ideas and put them into practice. I’ve worked in a private academy in Segovia for several years and at ih Madrid. I’ve also worked for British Council summer camps. I find teaching English a creative, challenging, enthusiastic and interesting way of living life. Being able to interact with people and help them learn a beautiful language, I might say, is really enriching!

My reasons for coming to Riga: Mainly personal ones, since my mother’s parents were both Latvian. I had the opportunity of visiting the country for the first time in 2002 and truly fell in love with it! With its people, culture, language, literature, history, food, nature, traditions…Therefore I am very grateful to be able to go there and work, live and experience it all!

Philip Edwards

About myself: I was born in Coventry, England where my parents still live. After graduating university I did a series of uninspiring jobs before deciding to do something worthwhile with my life. So I chose EFL teaching and I’ve not looked back since.

My hobbies and interests: I like travelling – getting lost in new places. I love music, whether performing or just listening. I’ve heard there’s a pretty decent blues bar in Riga so I’ll be keen to check that out. I’m also a passionate cook and I’m looking forward to trying out some local recipes.

My educational background: I have a degree in Social Sciences from Nottingham Trent University and a CELTA from a school in Manchester, England.

My teaching experience: I’ve taught at summer school with mainly European teenagers and for the last two years I’ve been working at a public elementary school in Seoul, South Korea.

My reasons for coming to Riga: I wanted to move (a little bit) closer to home and back to Europe where it’s possible to get a decent beer and the summers aren’t ludicrously hot. Riga is known for it’s beauty and multiculturalism despite its relatively small size. I’m also interested in getting experience with an IH school due to their reputation so when I saw the advertisement I had to apply!

Thomas Linton

About myself:  I grew up in the English county of Surrey, in a small town called Godalming. I also spent a few years living and working in London, which is about an hour away by train.

My hobbies and interests: I have a passion for travel and meeting new people. I feel very lucky to have spent time in countries as diverse as Mongolia and Uruguay. I also enjoy the cinema and socialising with friends, while sampling some good quality local beer!

My educational background: In 2004 I graduated from the University of Portsmouth with a degree in German. As part of the course, I also spent a year studying at the University of Erfurt, Germany. Following this, I spent a number of years working for the British Tourist Board (Visit Britain) and as a salesperson within the travel industry. I gained the CELTA certificate at International House London in June 2009 and have been permanently teaching since.

My teaching experience: I’ve taught at International House Katowice (Poland) for the last two academic years. I’ve been lucky to gain experience in teaching a wide variety of levels and ages. I’ve also worked at two language schools in London. I really enjoy experimenting with new ideas and seeing my students progress!

My reasons for coming to Riga: I’ve been to Riga twice before and on both occasions, it felt like it would be a very nice place to live. I love the sea and having survived the depths of the Polish winter for the last two years, I have to say, I quite like the ice and the snow too!

Irina Piskorska

"The bad teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." Irina believes that "inspired students" learn much faster, that is why she does her best to create the most enjoyable learning atmosphre for her students. Many of them continue their studies again and again, treating English as their hobby and classes as meeting friends in the most exclusive club. " We laugh a lot, but in English! " - her students say.

After the graduation from the Latvian State University, she spent a year in the USA as a camp counselor. She worked with children , travelled across the country, meeting people and " picking up " a lot of "alive English ". On returning from the USA, for several years she was teaching in a state school. Then Irina took up a new job as a travel agent dealing mostly with education abroad programmes. She joined IH Riga SATVA 12 years ago as foreign programmes manager and a teacher. She has specialized in teaching adults, teenagrers and children and got her International House Conversion Course Certificate.

"All my free time I spend with my husband and children: an 13-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter. We love travelling ! I am happy to see my son, who is International House' s student too, communicating in English, German and Spanish worldwide... And I want to say - It is never too early and never too late to learn a language ! "

Margaret Sinelnikova

About myself: I am very creative and enthusiastic. In 2006 I was awarded the prize “Gold Pen” for the results of my work.

My hobbies/ interests: I travel a lot.

My educational background: My qualifications include a BA, a MA (methods of EFL) and numerous courses both in Latvia and abroad.

My teaching experience: I am a local teacher of English, and have been working for Satva for 6 years. My priorities are: a creative approach to EFL teaching, creating a friendly atmosphere in the classroom which is part and parcel of giving a sound knowledge of English. At the moment I am focusing on preparing students for the centralized examination in Year 12. I have got excellent experience in it and my students’ results are impressive.
Having travelled a lot and having visited many countries outside Latvia, I use this background knowledge in my work.

Leonid Sorokins

About myself: I was born in Riga, Latvia, and have lived all my life in this country

My hobbies/ interests:  I love reading and I do it extensively to keep my English up to date. Gardening and socialising with people I love, admire and respect are some of  my other interests.

My dreams and ambitions: To visit every English-speaking country.

My educational background:

I went to the Latvian State University (as it was called in my time) and graduated from it with a Diploma in English philology. Since university graduation I have done a lot of  language  courses:

• In Denmark – “How to build a democratic society”
• In Sweden – “Ecology and environmental awareness”
• The UK and Latvia – refresher courses for teachers of English
• Latvia – EU project – teaching English to secondary school students in the  EU countries
• IH Riga – numerous professional development  seminars and courses

My teaching experience: Rewarding moments:

I began my teaching career as practically all university graduates did in the 70s – Latvian state schools – and since that time all my life has been connected with English:

- I worked at the Faculty of foreign languages  of the Latvian state university
- I taught English while doing my regular services in the army
- I did a lot of translation for people working in business and medicine
- and finally I joined SATVA, where I have already been working for many years.

The most rewarding things about my work: I get a lot of pleasure working with enthusiastic students who come to SATVA to learn English either from scratch or brush up their language skills. On the other hand it’s quite gratifying  to have a feeling of togetherness and  be an inseparable part of the excellent team of real professionals. IH RIGA  SATVA is a place where you have to be competitive – and it is GREAT

They studied very hard and always took top places in all kinds of competitions. It was a pleasure to reach them and just to spend time with them. Once they gave me a huge pink toy pig for my birthday (I collect toy pigs). It was beautiful, but very heavy. While I was carrying it I got so many comments in different languages from people around me- everybody liked it! My dear group # C516!: Veronika, Max, Kate, Nastja, Sveta, Ann and others!
