Bars and Cafes

There are many Bars and Cafes to choose from in Riga, especially in summer and early autumn when all the street cafes come alive. Here are a few to start with, but you will soon notice that there is no shortage of bars and cafés in Rīga.

Bars

Paddy Whelan’s (Grēcinieku 4) Irish theme bar. Tends to be more popular with the locals although you can usually hear people speaking English, especially in the upstairs bar. Sells Irish, ‘foreign’ and local brews and has live Irish music at the weekends. One recent attraction was the sight of Shane McGowan slumped in a corner after his Riga concert. English speaking barstaff.

Skyline Bar (Hotel Latvija) Worth paying the extra  for the beer just for the view from the 26th floor and the ride in the outside lift. Getting a window table can be difficult and so can getting served.

Cafés

There are hundreds of them all over town where you can get coffee, cakes, sandwiches, salads, light meals etc. The following are within 5 minutes walk of the school:

Francu Maiznica – Cadets de Gascogne (Basteja bulv 8) Run by French ex-pat Bernard Larane. Strong coffee, fresh bread, quiche, pain au chocolat.

Coffee Nation and Double Coffee - Chains of coffee shops which besides coffee also sells delicious pastries and British style sandwiches.
